RELEASE ‘DESPERATE LOVE’ CULTIVATED SOUND
MARCH 2024
Brooklyn-based artist Maŕa reveals second single 'Desperate Love' from her genre-spanning debut album Dawn, upcoming on her label Cultivated Sound. It stands in stark contrast to the lead single, the dark ambient cut titled 'God Damn You.' Trip-hop track 'Desperate Love' sees her collaborating with San Francisco band Ssleeping Desiress, known for inventive, melancholic darkwave. The result is a brooding, ominous record that implores the protagonist against committing betrayal. She further invites us into her world with the release of a charged music video, featuring Maŕa herself drifting through New York.
She says: "'Desperate Love' is this romantic, poetic track that I hope listeners will relate to with any of their experiences of feeling so desperate for someone who is equally crazy about them. At the time of writing this song, my partner was touring in China, really coming into his own as an artist. It was a tough time, I felt shunned to an extent as he didn’t have much time for me for those six months. I also took the track to experiences where darkness takes over this person and they betray you and your love. I speak about all the real moments that everyone most likely goes through and you either leave or find growth to overcome it."
Immersed in a tight-knit community of creatives in Brooklyn, Maŕa wears many hats, and wears them well. As a DJ, she’s a regular at The Lot Radio and has played at some of the city’s most notable haunts including Elsewhere, Bossa Nova Civic Club, H0L0, Market Hotel, and the now closed and dearly missed venue Output. Cultivated Sound, her New York-based imprint and creative collective/agency has been home to records from trailblazing artists Ariel Zetina, Maria Chávez, Hiroko Yamamura, Phon.o and Rosa Anschutz, and has hosted parties with line-ups featuring AceMo, Savile, Antenes, Chamberlain Zhang, Katie Rex and Haruka. Beyond self-releasing, her work has also made its way to New York outpost Air Texture, landing on its compilation series, alongside Silent Servant, Rrose, Octa Octa, Laurel Halo and Luke
Maŕa is active in New York's fashion scene, seeking to merge it with sound and performance. She owns jewellery and accessories brand Maŕa Peralta Studio, with Eartheater, Julia Fox and TYGAPAW being some of those seen in her handcrafted stainless steel pieces. As spotlighted by PAPER Mag, last year she debuted at New York Fashion Week, performing at House of Yes with the KRATER collective to showcase her new jewellery collection DESTRUCTION. Collaborating with guitarist Wilson Flores, this was an immersive, experimental set that brought together a fusion of fashion, design, sculpture, expression, movement, art and techno.
